Steps to Nurture and Reboot Your Gut
There’s a well-known process referred to as the 4 R’s: Remove, Restore, Reinoculate and Repair. And, that’s exactly what we are doing with our 30-day gut reboot.
Remove: The very first step is to remove the items that are not supporting your gut health including processed, fake foods, foods that are known to cause sensitivities and chronic stress. We are striving to remove the items that are known to cause inflammation and irritation in the gut.
Restore: It’s as simple as replacing your diet with a whole-foods based diet that nurtures and feeds your body. Your gut microbiome actually responds to the food you put in your body. When you consume a whole-foods based diet and avoid the fake-foods your gut microbiome begins to work for you and the more variety your diet is the more flexible your microbiome becomes.
This is also a great time to add a little apple cider vinegar and digestive enzymes to your daily routine. A little apple cider vinegar mixed with water daily aids your digestion and can help to relieve heartburn. Enzymes help you assimilate and absorb the nutrients from your whole-food diet.
Reinoculate: It’s time to add in the good and restore what may be missing from your gut’s ecosystem. This includes supplementing with a solid probiotic and eating a variety of fermented foods. Probiotics help maintain your gut’s ecosystem providing it with beneficial bacteria.
Repair: Last, its time to repair. Many of the shifts already made actually help with the repair process: consuming a whole-food diet and adding in prebiotics, probiotics, and fermented foods. There are, however, certain foods that are known to help repair the gut including homemade broths and stocks from grass-fed bones, aloe vera, and fermented foods.
This is also a time to get into a relaxed state of mind. Remember that ever-important connection called the gut-brain axis? Well, your mind plays a crucial role in your gut reboot as well. In additional to eating and supplementing with the right foods, it’s important to work on your mind. Practice meditation, deep breathing and gratitude daily, multiple times a day if you can.
